Wood statuette of Yashoda. India, 19th Century


Wood statuette representing Yashoda, wife of gopas Nanda, the biological mother of Bala-Krishna (kt : bala : child). He is identified as Krishna-herder, with dark complexion “like a rain cloud”, son of Vasudeva and niece of Kansa. He is the eighth earthly carnation (avatar) of Vishnu, to save the world from demons. According to legend, he was born in Northern India in Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) from Vishnu’s hair. Krishna’s childhood reveals a wild figure who liked pranks and games.
