Wood Mara-vijaya Buddha. Burma, 18th-19th Century


Wood Mara-vijaya Buddha with gilt traces. Statue carved in round of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in lotus position (padmasana) atop tall stepped throne, in the appearance of Mara-vijaya (defying Mara), closely crossed legs, showing feet soles. The right hand does calling earth to witness gesture (bhumisparsha mudrā). Left hand with palm facing up along abdomen symbolizes meditation (dhyāna mudrā). Ears have same length as fingers except for thumbs. Hairstyle with small curls is topped with a stupa.
