From the sixties Dali started working considerably on sculptural pieces. The religious subject, which had impregnated his pictorial work for more than two decades, moved to his three dimensional work. Here, the cardinal Charles Borromeo appears without his ecclesiastic attire. His silhouette is simplified to the maximum, in order to emphasize the gesture of offering the chalice with the allusion to the merciful act of giving Communion to the victims of the plague.
