Pair of wood and mother of pearl folding armchairs. Syria, Late 19th Century

Pair of wood folding chairs chiseled with palmettes and inlaid with mother of pearl and another essence wood roundels and star motifs. Backrest topped with fleuron fronton inset with Arab inscribed cartouche and topped with circular set with fleuron medallion inset with star topping a crescent moon. Legs repeat the backrest’s symmetrical structure and atop upright support with cut-out scroll contour.

Height of seating: 46 cm (18-1/10 in.) - Height of backrest: 57 cm (22-1/3 in.) - Width: 39 cm (15-1/3 in.)

Gaps in mother of pearl inlaid work and wear. Mechanism still functions. Missing two tips for seating structure for one chair in which a side slat is off the axis.
