Since the opening of the Estates General legislative assembly in May 1789, tempers flared. The Bastille was taken on July 14. In this electrifying climate the banquet was held at the Guard of Flanders on October 1st, at the Opera of Versailles.

The bodyguards decided to organize a banquet in honor of the arrival of a new regiment, that of Flanders. A table for two hundred ten was set in the pit of the Opera. Acclaimed toasts were made for the royal family when they appeared. The orchestra played "O Richard, O mon roi" (O Richard, O my king) by Grétry.

These noisy demonstrations loyal to the monarchy provoked anger in the capital. The newspapers transformed the banquet into an orgy or feast and argued that the tricolor was trampled upon. Some even turned to the white side, a symbol of the king.
