Marble head identified as the Empress Faustina the Younger

Marble head identified as the Empress Faustina the Younger (125/130-175 A.D.), wife of Marcus Aurelius.

White marble with fine grain. Elaborate hairstyle with wavy locks, thick locks along the temple and three braids drawn back into a bun.

Missing nose, chin and neck base, restored with plaster. Small shock, chips along the ear tips. Overall wear.

Label "U" from a former collection.

Height: 21 cm (8-1/4 in.).

This work may be compared with the one of the Musei Capitolini and can be dated based on the hairstyle after the birth of her son Commodus in 161 A.D.
