Māravijaya Buddha in dry lacquer and cold applied gilt. Historical Shākyamuni Buddha seated on a throne in the Lotus position (padmāsana). The right motioning the gesture of Witness to the Earth while the left hand, palm in the air at the lap symbolises meditation. Hair in small locks is surmounted by a skull protuberance (ushnīsha) and crowned by a summital bulbouse point. The fine features of the face, half-closed eyes, the look downwards, a long straight nose, a mouth with fine lips and a smile in the form of a half-crescent creates an immense serenity in this piece.
