Letter from Treasury of France pressuring attendees to address their states

Ayant esté chargé par Monseigneur le Duc de Sully de vous presser sur l’envoye de l’estat de la valleur des finanes de vostre générallité pour l’année prochaine, je vous supplie d’avoir agréable que ce mot vous en face ressouvenir. Vous connaissez combien l’advancement de ceste expédition est nécessaire puisque sans cela on ne sauroit dresser les estatz du Roy, qui en la saison où nous sommes devroient desja estre fort advancez. Sur quoy ne vous pouvant rien dire dadvantage que vous ne sçachiez mieux que moy, je me contenteray de vous asseurer que je demeureray pour jamais (…).(Having been chosen by Monseigneur le Duc de Sully to stress the importance of addressing the states concerning the general finances for next year, I implore you to agree with this when facing the recollection. You know how the advancement of this expedition is necessary because without it the King’s state is underfunded. Whereupon you can not say anything with disadvantages for you do not know better than me, I contenteray you asseurer I demeureray [sic] for never (...).

Sully had ordered a new round of taxes in August 1609; very unpopular it was to finance the war that entailed Henri IV’s support for Netherlands against Spain; Henri IV was assassinated six months later on May 14, 1610.
