Painter recognized for gypsy plights, depressed suburbs, fortifications, streets along the Faubourg under snow, and carnivals. He never painted beyond the French capital and its suburb. Within Paris, he took on his preferred views of picturesque old Montmartre. He sought the picturesque often when he enlivened the large composition with clowns from circus ring, lovers dancing and excavators searching for the rare object during the junk fair.
