Jean Adolpe BEAUCE (1818-1875)was a painter of military subjects, student of C. Bazin. He made his debut at the Salon of 1839, then since 1843 he followed the French army in North Africa (period in which the presented work was probably painted), the Middle East and Mexico. Numerous paintings by him relating to the Second Empire battles and primarily the Mexico expedition are still displayed at the Chateau of Versailles.
