Probably Bombay, circa 1880

Furniture produced in Bombay in the 19th century from the 1850s was created in "ebonized exotic wood" known as "bois de rose Indian" (Indian rose wood) and was intricately carved with flowers, plant scrollwork and animal motifs such as birds, lions and snakes. The inspiration for these motifs was probably from the decorative European vocabulary drawn from the Antiquity. These pieces were principally produced for exportation.
