Georges Albert Etienne BELNET (1876-?)
Soldats dans Soissons (Soldiers at Soissons), 1916
Mixed media under glass (gouache, pastels) on paper
Dated and signed lower left.
Georges Belnet was a famous illustrator, who executed numerous representations of the “grande guerre” (WWI in French). Certain illustrations were published in major newspapers such as The New York Times. The scene represented here illustrates well the anxiety felt by waiting combat soldiers in deserted alleys, rendered in blue camaïeu. He is also known for views of Brittany and Corsica. He was a member of the Society of French Artists.
