Condition report:
The painting is on its canvas of origin which was painted over. The painting is under an uneven varnish. We note a slightly visible crackling network notably on the Doge’s face. Restorations are visible by the tabs on verso’s lower part.

Inspired by the drama by Byron, The Two Foscari, Giuseppe Verdi staged I Due Foscari for the Rome theater, Teatro Argentina in November 1844.

A painting by Delacroix is in the collections of Museum Condé at Chantilly, France, illustrates an episode similar to ours (canvas, 93 x 132 cm [36-1/2 x 52 in.])
