Ferdinand Barbedienne. Pair of Neo-Greek candlesticks


Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE (1810-1892)

Pair of tripod bronze candlesticks inspired from the Antiquity resting on three curved feet terminating by men’s feet in sandals resting on disks and scrolling palmettes.

Fluted stem inspired from the Egyptian Antiquity . Upper pary ornated with a bust of a bearded philosopher supporting two crossed volutes. Save-all ornated with a circular olive branch frieze.
Signed twice F.BARBEDIENNE on the back of the busts.

Late 19th Century

Slight deformation on one socket.

Chiselwork of high quality and great attention to detail. Barbedienne was renown for the quality of his bronzes. He is also known due to a large production of éditions after artist’s models. His production of objects of decoration is lesser known, but also as rich. This sculpture was probably executed after a drawing by Louis Constant Sévin.
