François Ferdinand d'Orléans, Prince of Joinville (1818-1900) was the third son of King Louis Philippe. He set himself early on with the Navy, his military field throughout his career, notably with the expedition "Retour des Cendres" (Return of Ashes) which involved returning the remains of Emperor Napoleon I to France.
Exiled with his family, the prince participated with his nephews the Count of Paris and the Duke of Chartres in the American Civil War siding with the North. The Prince of Joinville died in Neuilly, June 16, 1900. His written works include Vieux Souvenirs.
