Jean-Joseph, Chevalier de LORGE (Aix-en-Provence, France 1733-probably 1795)
Portraits of Mr. Etienne Devillas (1710 - 1776) and his wife Mrs. Elisabeth Larguier (1710 - 1789)
Pair of pastels
Verso with label: "Ma grand-mère/Madame De Villas, née Larguier/de Nismes/ch. De Villas" (My grandmother/Mrs. De Villas, maiden name Larguier/from Nismes/ch. De Villas)
We would like to cordially thank Mr. Neil Jeffarès with his help in verifying the signature and identifying the figures based on photographs.
Etienne Devillas was a merchant active in Nîmes and Lyon, France. He was from a judicial family based in Nîmes. According to Neil Jeffarès, the paintings and signatures are without a doubt pastiches of older paintings. Notably, the clothing of the era and the presented sitters (circa 1740) and the era in which the pastel artist was active (after 1760) do not match.
