Charles Marie BOUTON (Paris 1781-1853)
Tombeau de Napoléon à Sainte Hélène (Napoleon’s Tomb, Saint Helena)
Paper laid down on canvas
Signed lower right : Bouton
Height : 16,5 cm (6-1/2 in.) - Width : 21,5 cm (8-1/2 in.)
Frame: 27 x 32 cm (10-1/2 x 12-1/2 in.)
The painting is under a slightly uneven varnish. The laying down on canvas was done long ago and not fully planed. We note a small loss on lower right part.
Specialized in dioramas, Bouton evoked here the Geranium Valley (called afterwards “tomb valley”) where Emperor Napoleon I was buried on May 9, 1821. A star seems to indicate to visitors the place where the illustrious person rests.
