Phrai Malai visiting hell. Bronze with black lacquer and cold gilding. Clothed in traveling monk attire, a scarf tied horizontally on chest and alms bowl hanging from shoulder, Phra Malai appears above a damned group illustrating sufferings endured in hell.
Among the important Buddhist religious figures, Phra Malai, originating from Sri Lanka, occupies a particular role in South-East Asia Buddhism, especially in Thailand and Laos.
