Daughter of Louis Philippe, Duchesse of Wurtemberg, Marie Christine of Orleans studied sculpting with David d'Angers. Having died young, she sculpted a few busts and statues in which the most famous being Joan of Arc praying, executed in marble in 1837 and currently conserved at the Musée de Versailles. Louis Philippe, disappointed with Pradier, asked his daughter to create the work for Versailles. She enjoyed a great success as evident with the bronze example presented here.
