ANTWERP SCHOOL circa 1600
Vierge à l'Enfant (Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus)
Oak panel with battens
Height: 42 cm (16-1/2 in.) - Width: 32 cm (12-1/2 in.)
Frame: 51 x 41 cm (20 x 16 in.)
Carved gilt wood frame, French Work, 17th Century
The panel is planed and healthy with batten markers.
The painting is under an aged varnish with impacted dirt.
Pigment on Mary’s coat turned green due to oxidization.
Under black light, we note two restoration projects. The older: small restorations on Christ’s forehead and body, other more major restorations on Mary (neck, cheeks, forehead and right eye) and along the joining of dress and coat. Scattered restorations on layers. Regarding the more recent restorations, the most visible correspond to restored vertical cracks: one crossing Mary’s head to bust (16 cm [6-1/4 in.]), one small crack on lower left corner (5 cm), along cape’s opening until Mary’s elbow (5 cm [2 in.]) and one crack on layers that has overlapped restoration (12 cm [4-3/4 in.]).
Small scattered restorations all over the composition.
The restorations do not disturb the composition’s narration.
